Oscars 2010: Nominations

02 of March 2010

Steven Gätjen reported again this year live from the OscarsWhen on 7 March at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles to the meridian 82 Time the Oscars are awarded, then he is back live performances: Pro Seven film expert Steven Gätjen. With interviews from the red carpet of the 37-year-old will be glitz and glamor of Hollywood is transferred directly into our room early morning.

You were many times in the Oscars there. Is this for you is still something special, or become yet more of a routine job?

Steven Gätjen: That every time something really special for me. It’s like Easter, birthday and Christmas together. This is nothing that can be routinely acceptable because each year, walking around completely different people. It is a surprise every year, who will be nominated. It is a surprise every year, as the weather gets. Just like two years ago, when it has rained so that they have set up a tent. It’s like an adventure. I do not remember ever taking place when the Oscars, but I never know what will happen. It’s like a piñata.

What was the most outstanding experience for you, that you had been at the Oscars?
For me it was a very special moment when I was Angelina Jolie for the first time in front of the mic and the camera. It even gives this disassociation to the red carpet, the stars are on the forever. And since you will hold the microphone over a small hedge. Back then we were right next to the ABC stage. And ABC is building higher and higher than all others so that they are more prominent and visible to everyone. And when Angelina Jolie had just given interviews and has then gone to the front but not to the side and suddenly stood right next to me and tapped me on the side. And I turned around and thought: This is now probably not true! And she was incredibly nice, clear and direct.
That was indeed a prime example of stars who come over on the red carpet really nice. But there’s also determined the complete opposite. Who dares to be approached not like it at all?
Sean Penn – for me, a gifted actor, but we never had the opportunity to speak with him. It goes from the always the case that he either goes back around and jump into the building in, around or in front, but so tight with time, that he must remain in no case more. He has such a charisma that I always think if I put to him the wrong question, then he jumps over the barrier and half my time just short.

How is it your working day on 7 March look like?

In the morning we meet with the editors and the director and a leisurely breakfast, take out a bit of pace. Since we go by the day or times. And then we usually go for lunch already over to the Kodak. There we have to make a technical check and then the adrenaline starts pumping through the body. Clock from 15 at the latest, we take our seats and we are trying to hold its ground when you go the scramble. After the red carpet it’s going wrong with telephone interviews for the radio. Then we will have our special Pro Seven record and then we are usually so ready to 1 clock and then I’m really ready. We go grab a bite and then I fall into bed dead.

The beautiful after-show parties leaves you like?

I think if I had the opportunity to “Vanity Fair” party-going, then I would be happy of course. But after you have seen relaxing hour and a half comes down, then overpowered one hand, this complete exhaustion.

Who are they for you, the Oscar favorite in major categories?

Best actor I think is Jeff Bridges for “Crazy Heart”. Or, that would be a total surprise, Colin Firth, for “A Single Man.” Best Supporting Actor, I’m quite sure, Christoph Waltz. He would have fully deserved it. Very difficult it is for the prize for Best Actress. I do not know if it is not a curse, if you’ve been nominated so many times like Meryl Streep (for “Julie & Julia”: editor’s note). What I would find horny, that’s when Sandra Bullock an Oscar for “Blind Side” wins. Best Supporting Actress) is probably Mo’Nique (for “Precious”; editor’s note. When I sit on the top film “Deadly Command – The Hurt Locker”. And in the best director I think that Jason Reitman (for “Up In The Air”, editor’s note) or James Cameron (of “Avatar”; will make note’s note).

Had it for James Cameron earned in your eyes, winning the Oscar for Best Director for?

He could not definitely deserves the Oscar for Best Film. But you have time to think what he’s done with “Avatar” for which he has invented a completely new camera system. He has shot in 3D before green screen, did what no one before him. I do not know if the let him go completely blank, and I can well imagine that they give him the directing Oscar. But there was prior opinion, “Avatar” could make everything flat. I am sure that this does not happen.

Do you think it justified the hype that is made by James Cameron’s “Avatar” for?

“Avatar” is a pure popcorn movie. It disappears into a world for nearly three hours, and so little has taken place in this manner not easy. So I can completely understand the hype. And I can also understand that people look at the film more often and enjoy it. That to me is like the time when George Lucas came out with “Star Wars”. That was also something, what no one had ever seen before. The film is 33 years old, and I think he’s still brilliant. And I think that “Avatar” is also a film that for a long time can still exist as it is.

Who would for Steven Gätjen if he should decide on its own to give the Oscar for Best Picture?

This is really difficult. But I lay me down: I would give him “In glourious Basterds”. And simple for a reason: Quentin Tarantino’s crazy but brilliant. The movie is crazy, but super. I have had a huge kick out of me to look at the. “In glourious Basterds” represents something that the Academy would do well – something fresh and new.

How do you see the chances for “The white band” on the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film?

“The white band has” the greatest opportunities. Although I must say that the French contribution, “Un Prophète” is now also acted quite high. This will be a neck-and-neck race between these two films, with “The white band is a bit further forward. It would be really interesting if they would go on wave, which regards the success of the Austro-German production. I am a little anxious, because if the Academy might say, “Not again”, or whether they can make themselves free of it completely.

Did you really had to speak get the opportunity, once with Christoph Waltz?

I spoke with him when he was on press tour for “In glourious Basterds” was. He is someone who analyzes all questions to the smallest detail, and then another question is also happy to answer to yourself and then digress from the topic and then revert back to the topic. It is difficult to get from him an answer that is short and crisp, and he is no friend to give superficial answers. He is someone who has his profession, what he makes love, madly and truly enjoys it correctly.
He is someone who knows what he can, without being arrogant in any way. He has given his best and now deserves to receive the laurels. And that is a kind of recognition that he is safe and very happy that he has absolutely earned.
Away from the well-known stripes as just “Avatar” or “In glourious Basterds” – You have among many of the films nominated for an Oscar for our users still be one or two hot tip?
“Precious”! And if you have the opportunity, then watch the best in their original language. This is really so deep in American society in there, that you have to look at. I sat in the cinema and sometimes really hard to breathe, I flinched, that’s a really, really impressive film. And then there is a documentary that is also nominated, which I find simply great: This is “The Cove”. These are my two tips that I can put just any heart.
